Taking public transport to Western Sydney
Removing transport disadvantage: taking public transport to the western suburbs
700,000 people in Western Sydney face transport disadvantage. This causes car dependence because there are no affordable or available public transport options. Sydney needs transport options that are affordable and available.
The Greens are working to:
- Upgrade bus services in western Sydney to ensure comprehensive coverage-.
- Reallocate hundreds of inner suburban STA buses to the outer suburbs to better connect residential areas with rail links, industrial areas and commercial centres
- Fast track the completion of the missing North West South West Rail Link
- Build a non-radial light rail link connecting Cronulla, Hurstville, Bankstown, Lidcombe, Homebush Bay, Top Ryde and the Macquarie Centre.
People
in Western Sydney have to endure longer travel times and higher travel
costs than people in the Inner City. There are massive black holes in
the public transport and this is forcing people in Western Sydney into
car dependence. Expanding public transport services is the way to
restore transport equity in Western Sydney and to protect the
environment.
Instead of building more motorways we can quickly
attract people to public transport in Western Sydney by extending
transport concessions and introducing a 'one ticket' integrated
transport system across all rail and bus services, including private
bus services.
The Greens are lobbying the Government to
investigate a fast metro rail service between the CBD and Parramatta
under Victoria Road. This would take tens of thousands of cars off the
road and reduce travel time to Parramatta to 20 minutes.
Public
transport in Western Sydney is woefully inadequate, traffic congestion
abounds and the suburbs sit under a haze of air pollution. Bus
services in Western Sydney need to be upgraded to ensure proper
coverage. Buses get cancelled and trains run late and are overcrowded.
