Tebbutt the new target for Save South East Forests campaign
Thursday 19 March 2009
The Greens have launched a new campaign to end the woodchippping of the South East native forests, targeting Minister for Environment Carmel Tebbutt in her seat in the Labor/Green marginal electorate of Marrickville.
Protesters gathered today outside Minister Tebbutt's office,
accompanied by a koala that was turfed out of his home as a result of
logging and has hitchhiked to Sydney looking for protection. The South
Coast koala is featured in a YouTube video as part of the campaign:

NSW Greens MP and spokesperson for South East NSW Lee Rhiannon said,
"One of the most significant actions we can take to cut Australia's
greenhouse gas emissions is to stop the logging of native forests. Our
forests are of far greater value as a carbon bank than as a shipload of
woodchips heading to Japan.
The Greens Deputy Mayor of Marrickville Fiona Byrne said, "Marrickville
is one of the greenest electorates in Australia. Voters living here care
about the environment. We want the government to deliver for them by
acting to protect these iconic forests.
Greens' Bega Valley Shire Councillor Keith Hughes, who was at the
launch said, "Ending wood chipping will protect endangered animals and
save taxpayers millions of dollars which are now spent subsidising this
industry.
Key demands:
·End the woodchipping of the South East native forests.
·Don't renew the Eden Wood Supply Agreement that ends in September
2009.
·Block Eden Chip Mill's proposal to build a power station fuelled
overwhelmingly by native timber.
·Close the Eden Chip Mill.
Greens groups in Sydneys Inner West and South East NSW have come
together on the campaign. It includes:
·A new Greens website: http://end-southeast-woodchipping.org/
·A YouTube video featuring a South Coast koala travelling to
Marrickville to ask Carmel Tebbutt for protection. See home page of
website above.
