Stop the Intervention Rally
Sunday 20 June 2010
Lee spoke at the Town Hall rally, with other speakers including Steve Jumpinjimpa, a bilingual teacher from Lajamanu NT
“The Federal Intervention, designed by John Howard and continued
under
Kevin Rudd, has achieved very little yet fundamentally undermined
what
small amount of goodwill existed between the government and
local
Aboriginal communities.
“A recent report by the Australian
Indigenous Doctors Association and
researchers at the University of NSW
paints a bleak picture of the
likely success of the intervention
strategy.
“To keep pouring public money into a process which is producing
such
poor outcomes for Aboriginal people is bad policy and bad
government.
“The Greens fought hard to oppose the suspension of the
Racial
Discrimination Act which has allowed the Intervention to go
ahead.
“We will continue to oppose the Intervention and its regressive
impacts.
