State poll: Greens NSW on record 17 per cent

Tuesday 15 December 2009

Today's Newspoll has the Greens NSW vote at a record 17 per cent in the state poll. Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said, "The poll reflects the growing support the Greens NSW are gaining across the state.

"The poll suggests that the voters have not been fooled by a change of Labor Premier.

"Labor's vote dropped 4 per cent, while the Greens picked up 5 per cent. Support for the Coalition increased by 2 per cent. This outcome suggests ongoing voter hesitancy to support the Coalition.

"This record level of support for the Greens comes after a very active year by the Greens on a range of issues that address key community concerns.

"This Newspoll puts the Greens on track to win at least three seats in the NSW Upper House at the next state election and a possible break through in a Lower House seat.

"The strong Greens campaign in Bradfield on climate change issues would have helped to boost our support.

"The numerous political donation scandals tarnishing the major parties that the Greens have helped to expose are also attracting more voters.

"The public want politics cleaned up and are sick of the spin and empty promises from Labor and Coalition leaders.

"The drop in the Nationals vote from 10 at the last election to 5 per cent in this poll reflects voter concern is not limited to Labor," Ms Rhiannon said.
