Rees Cabinet reeshuffle: environment downgraded

Friday 11 September 2009

Greens MP and parliamentary process spokesperson Lee Rhiannon says today's Cabinet reshuffle demotes the environment portfolio and shows Premier Rees has little interest in the critical job of combating climate change and protecting the environment. Ms Rhiannon says the changes make clear how Nathan Rees is beholden to Labor's factional system.

"The environment has gone from being an only child with a senior minister to one of three siblings in the control of newcomer John Robertson, showing Rees has little regard for its welfare," Ms Rhiannon said.

"John Robertson, with energy and the environment, is now the Peter Garrett of NSW politics. The former anti-privatisation crusader is now the architect of its implementation.

"This reshuffle unveils Nathan Rees as a factional player who must reward his loyal foot-soldiers who have worked to retain his tentative grip on power.

"Public transport will receive even less attention now David Campbell also has roads. The might of the RTA will further dampen any plans the Rees government has for public transport," Ms Rhiannon said.
