Political spectrum unites to keep Moore and Centennial Parks in public hands
Saturday 05 June 2010
Commenting on the proposed transfer of the ownership of Moore and Centennial Parks to the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust, NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon threw her full support behind the campaign to keep both parks in public hands.
Ms Rhiannon spoke at a public rally alongside former federal
Opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull and Anne Keating.
"I have lived in the eastern suburbs all my life, and so I have first
hand experience of how important Moore and Centennial Parks are to many people," Ms Rhiannon said.
"This issue has drawn people from all sides of politics together to
work to keep these iconic Sydney parklands in public hands.
"Today, on World Environment Day, Premier Kristina Keneally would be wise to announce that she has dropped this ill-conceived policy.
"If she fails to back off she will end up with another major headache. Surely she knows that is the last thing she needs - a fight on her home turf.
"These are public parks and they must remain in public hands.
"The NSW government needs to wake up and realise that NSW is not theirs to give away
"The idea of these Sydney landmarks becoming car-parks for sports fans or being sold off to fill the coffers of the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust is unthinkable.
"The complete lack of community consultation in the process to date shows the utter disregard NSW Labor has for the residents of Sydney.
