Friday 30 July 2010
With the close of nominations yesterday, Greens lead Senate candidate Lee Rhiannon today announced that her party will run its biggest campaign to date, with local candidates in all 48 lower house seats.

Ms Rhiannon joined with candidates from the Greens’ strongest lower house seats of Sydney and Grayndler to make the announcement.
“This is an exciting election campaign, with a good prospect that the Greens’ vote will grow once again,” Ms Rhiannon said.
“Our candidates offer voters a real alternative to the blancmange being served up by the major parties, especially on climate change and refugees.
“Our lower house candidates are well connected with their local Greens group and community and environment groups.
“Their backgrounds are diverse, including union organisers, small business owners, artists, school principals, lawyers, environmental campaigners, retirees, authors and full-time parents.
“Getting a spot for NSW in the Senate is by no means guaranteed and breaking into the lower house will be tough, even in strong Sydney seats like Sydney and Grayndler.
“However we’re optimistic and energised by the great support we are receiving from people out on the hustings and we’re working our hardest to boost the Greens’ vote,” Ms Rhiannon said.
The Greens in 2010 have:
- 5 Senators in Federal Parliament, sharing the balance of power.
- 22 Greens in State Parliaments across Australia.
- The first Greens Cabinet positions in a Labor government, with Nick McKim the first Greens Minister and Cassy O’Connor the first Greens Parliamentary Secretary in Tasmania.
- 100 local councillors across Australia, including Mayors and Deputy Mayors.
