Labor looking down the barrel of another Shooters' Party Bill
Thursday 03 September 2009
The National Coalition for Gun Control (NCGC) and the Greens are calling on the Government to be vigilant and not allow the Shooters Party to bully them into further watering down of NSW gun laws.
Samantha Lee, Chair, NCGC says, “Mr Rees must remain strong and not cave in to the school yard bullying tactics played out by the Shooters Party.
“Last year the Government, with the support of the Opposition, passed the Firearms Amendment Bill 2008. This Bill significantly watered down NSW gun laws. New South Wales now has the worst gun laws in the country.
“These amendments included: allowing kids as young as 12 to go into any gun club and shoot with a high powered military style semi-automatic firearm without having to gain a permit. It also removed the need for gun owners to undergo a criminal record check if they are purchasing a second firearm of the same kind.
The Labor Party really needs to have a long hard think about what it is they stand for and whether they are willing once again to put the desires of shooters before the safety of the people of New South Wales. I hope they choose the latter.”
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says, "The government must put principle before politics and publicly distance itself from this latest Shooters Party bill that winds back gun control laws. If Labor fails to rule out supporting the bill it risks wearing further public anger as a result.
