Kill off CBD metro today and quarantine funding for rail

Friday 19 February 2010

Greens MP and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon believes Premier Keneally should immediately hit the government's ill conceived Metro plans on the head and promise that the billions currently earmarked for the project are redirected to heavy and light rail.

The Greens are also calling for the soon to be released transport blueprint to be backed by expert modelling and scrutinised by independent experts.

"Premier Kristina Kenneally must ensure the billions earmarked for the ill-conceived CBD Metro is spent on light and heavy rail and not put into some slush fund for the RTA's use," Ms Rhiannon said.

"If this government has any chance of survival it must abandon back-of-the-envelope Metro fantasies and progress a nuanced transport plan for Sydney based on expert modelling and advice.

"The Christie Report, informed by a strong community consultation process, is a solid place to start.

"The community have a right to know what the abandoned Metro project has cost the public purse.

"Right from the start the CBD Metro was shown to be an ass, but the Transport Minister pushed on regardless throwing away millions in taxpayer's money in the process," Ms Rhiannon said.
