Keneally's bible readings have no place in Same Sex adoption debate

Monday 28 June 2010

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says it is disappointing that NSW Premier Kristina Keneally referred to the bible when discussing same sex adoption reforms, rather than underlining obligations under human rights and equal opportunity laws.

"Extending adoption rights to people, regardless of their sexuality, is a sensible reform in line with international, federal and state human rights laws. The bible should have no bearing on the issue," Ms Rhiannon said.

"Regardless of Ms Keneally's clarifying statements she was clearly unwise to use this parable and allow the public to equate same sex couples with 'sinners'.

"The Premier should apologise to the gay and lesbian community.

"Quoting a passage from the bible when discussing same sex adoption introduces a moralism which is clearly unhelpful.

"The Premier's in principle support for Clover Moore's same sex adoption bill is welcome and final brings her party into the 21st century.

"Kristina Keneally could go one step further in progressing her understanding that 'Jesus loved all' by removing loopholes in NSW's Anti-Discrimination Act which allow discrimination against gay and lesbian people," Ms Rhiannon said.
