Greens on a roll! Big push to enrol young voters in the Hunter

Tuesday 06 July 2010

Commenting on today's revelations that young voter enrolments are down in the Hunter, Greens MP and lead Senate candidate Lee Rhiannon said that the Greens launched a last minute blitz to encourage young people to enrol to vote in the upcoming Federal election.

Ms Rhiannon is working with Lake Macquarie Greens Councillor Hannah Gissane, 21 years, and with other young Greens members to encourage people to register to vote.

Greens MP and Senate candidate Lee Rhiannon said: "It is likely that the electoral rolls will close in the next couple of weeks if an August election is called so young people need to enrol before it is too late.

"In NSW, Australian Electoral Commission data shows that 9.5% of adults have never enrolled to vote or have not updated their details. This is bad for democracy.

"In the Hunter, 7500 eligible Hunter voters younger than 26 were not yet enrolled to vote.

"Young people will inherit the legacy of inaction on climate change and it important that they are not shut out from having their say.

"Over the coming couple of weeks, the Greens will launch a last minute blitz through stalls and door-knocking to raise the number of people registered to vote in the Hunter before the upcoming Federal election", said Ms Rhiannon.

Lake Macquarie Greens councillor Hannah Gissane said: "It is disappointing but not surprising that young voter enrolments are down in the Hunter.

"Many young voters are disillusioned by the lack of choice between the two major political parties and particularly by the Labor government's inaction on climate change.

"The Greens want to empower young people to be involved in the political decisions that affect their lives. Greens policies look to the future, not just the 3 year electoral cycle.

"I am telling young people that I meet to get online or get down to a post office and register to vote", said Ms Gissane.
