Greens introduce bill to protect Graythwaite

Friday 11 September 2009

NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon today announced the introduction of a Greens private members bill in NSW Parliament yesterday, the 'Save the Graythwaite Estate Bill'.

"The Greens look forward to gaining support in NSW Parliament for the
bill which will stop the NSW government sell off, close Graythwaite's
gates to private developers and keep the estate for the people," Ms
Rhianon said.

"The Greens congratulate the CFMEU today for placing a Green Ban on the
historic Graythwaite Estate in North Sydney. The Greens bill will help
shore up arrangements by preventing the site from falling into private
hands.

"The impressive energy of the local community and North Sydney Council
in preventing the Rees government sell-off has paid off and will be
greatly assisted by the CFMEU ban.

"The Greens' Graythwaite bill will be modelled on our successful bill
to Save Callan Park in 2002. It will prevent any future sell-off and
private development of this glorious estate and keep this property in
public hands where it belongs.

"Our office is currently working with local campaigners to develop the
Save the Graythwaite Estate Bill.

"The Greens 2002 Save Callan Park Bill forced the NSW Labor government
to stop the Callan Park sell-off and a proposed 1,200 unit residential
development.

"The Greens private members bill will provide the legal protection
necessary to preserve Graythwaite for future generations," Ms Rhiannon
said.
