Fred Nile's one-stop shop a pointless exercise

Wednesday 16 February 2005

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon has criticised Fred Niles plan for one-stop shops for pregnant women, saying they were unnecessary and nothing more than a figleaf for his anti-woman, anti-abortion agenda.

"Women dont need moral lectures and guilt trips from the likes of Right to Life," Ms Rhiannon said.

"There are plenty of ways for pregnant women to get support, regardless of whether they are planning to have an abortion or not - this adds nothing positive to the picture.

"One of the most objectionable aspects of Mr Niles one-stop shop is that its entirely aimed at women. The fact that men are assumed to bear no responsibility simply reveals Fred Niles anti-woman agenda.

"The Greens support the present system. It works well, and was put in place after a vigorous debate and decades of struggle. It doesnt need to change, and we certainly dont need to return to the bad old days of backyard abortions.

"Prime Minister John Howard has let Liberal MPs like David Clarke and Tony Abbott out of their cage to serve as a distraction from more important political debates about the future of our planet, the war in Iraq and the planned cuts to social services.

"Its extraordinary to see Fred Nile and David Clarke describe abortion as evil while supporting a war in Iraq that has caused the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians, many of them women and children.

"Given the rank hypocrisy of these leaders of the so-called pro-life movement, its a wonder anyone takes them seriously," Ms Rhiannon said.

"The Greens call on the Carr Government to scrap plans to sell off the State Forests. This is the only way to protect jobs and uphold environmental standards.

"We also want a comprehensive and inclusive assessment of the potential social, environmental and economic costs of privatisation.

"So far all that's on offer are one-sided studies, and a Carr Government looking for any means of getting a budget surplus, regardless of the facts or the consequences," Ms Rhiannon said.
