Expansion plan for animated race gambling not justified
Wednesday 23 September 2009
Greens MP and gambling spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said the gambling game Trackside, presently restricted to casinos, should not be rolled out in TABs across the state.
"This is just crude revenue raising from a government which is
insensitive to the fate of problem gamblers and their families," Ms
Rhiannon said.
"We do not need to bet on imaginary horse races. There are already
massive opportunities to gamble in this state.
"The outcome will be more problem gambling.
"The push by Tabcorp and apparently backed by the Minister for Gaming
and Racing Kevin Green for the Trackside gambling game to be introduced
to new venues should not be supported.
"Under this Labor government we are seeing a penetration of more
gambling games in more venues.
"Trackside is designed to milk money out of people who enjoy a flutter
on the races.
"I understand the plan to expand venues where Trackside can operate
will shortly go to the Labor Caucus. They should vote down the
Minister's plan for this new game.
"The only winners out of this move will be the racing and gambling
industries. Punters will be fleeced heavily if these new gambling
machines are allowed into TABs.
"Tabcorp will be cheering on the Labor Caucus to back this move. Labor
MPs should take a stand and put limits on this gambling expansion plan.
"Tabcorp make political donations to Labor and the Coalition parties,"
Ms Rhiannon said.
