Christine Donayre launched as Greens candidate for Watson

Saturday 24 July 2010

Greens Federal Senate Candidate Lee Rhiannon and Greens ban campaigner Jack Mundey today launched the Federal candidate for Watson, Burwood Councillor Christine Donayre at Lakemba station.

The diverse crowd of supporters included members of the newly formed 'Tamils for Greens'. ‘I am excited about the Greens campaign and look forward to offering the people of Watson with a real alternative”, Ms Donayre said.

Ms Donayre is of Peruvian background and a mother of 3 who has lived most of her life in Western Sydney.  She stood for the Greens in Watson at the 2007 Federal election.

“In Watson, the Greens will be focusing on refugees, low-cost housing and climate change.

“The Greens believe we should exercise compassion towards people who are fleeing their home-country under threat of persecution.

‘The Greens are aware that members of the community can feel that the discussion about asylum seekers can bring unwanted and irrelevant attention to our hardworking communities in the south west of Sydney.

“Asylum seekers are people, not political footballs to be passed around between the major parties to secure electoral advantage.

“The Greens will push for more Federal funding for low-cost, good quality safe housing to counter soaring housing costs and overcrowding faced by many in our community.

“To improve our quality of life and pass on a safer climate to our children, Australia needs to transition to a low-carbon economy.

"The Greens are the only party willing to make the decisions and put forward the policies to realistically achieve this,: Clr Donayre said.

Greens Federal Senate Candidate Lee Rhiannon said, “I have worked closely with Christine and she makes a passionate and active Greens candidate.

“As an Union organiser Christine is committed to workers rights.

"She has a proven track record on Burwood Council that includes protecting heritage items and conservation areas like Tilba, working to secure more open green space and fighting over-development,” Ms Rhiannon said.
