Campbell should move on Central West branch lines report

Wednesday 24 February 2010

Greens MP and public transport spokesperson has called on Transport Minister David Campbell to direct funding to ensure five branch lines in the Central West remain operational, as recommended by a report presented by five Western NSW councils to the Minister today.

Weddin, Cowra, Blayney, Young and Harden Councils delivered the report on the branch lines to the Minister today (ABC online - http://tiny.cc/FREih)

"With the NSW promising more public transport infrastructure for Sydney in this week's Metropolitan Transport Plan, Minister Campbell must now shift his focus to address the paucity of rail infrastructure in Western NSW," Ms Rhiannon said.

"If the government does not act to restore these branch lines it will underline the perception that regional NSW is the poor cousin of Sydney when it comes to transport planning.

"Keeping these extremely valuable branch lines open is crucial for farmers, the environment, public safety and the economy.

"Leaving these public assets to rot is an enormous opportunity lost. It means more semi-trailers on country roads, more pollution and costs to the economy through accidents, deaths and road wear and tear.

"Mr David Campbell must give this report very serious attention. If not, Labor's reputation for abandoning the bush will continue to grow," Ms Rhiannon said.
