Call for Rees to maintain MP wage freeze

Friday 30 October 2009

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon has called on Premier Nathan Rees to reverse his decision to allow all NSW MPs to receive a three per cent pay rise and to change the law in NSW so parliament can reject excessive salary increases.

"Premier Rees could go some way to repairing his poor standing with the public if he froze the current pay rise," Ms Rhiannon said.

"Since 2007 NSW MPs have received close to a ten per cent pay rise.

"The automatic salary increases that flows on to state MPs from the federal decision should be dropped.

" Pay rises for MPs should be linked to rises in the minimum wage.

"Queensland has maintained a freeze on MPs' wages. The NSW Premier should follow the lead from Queensland," Ms Rhiannon said.
