Broad based action in parliament protest to oppose hunting in national parks deal
Tuesday 27 October 2009
Environment and animal welfare groups, the public sector union, the Greens and a range of local community groups staged a colourful protest outside the NSW parliament to call on the NSW government to publicly declare that there will be no deal with the Shooters Party over hunting in national parks.
Speakers included:
· MC - Lee Rhiannon, NSW Greens MP
· Bev Smiles - National Parks Association
· Steve Turner - Acting General Secretary, PSA
· Linda Stoner - Animal Liberation
· Ian Cohen - Greens MP
· Arthur Willis - Chairperson, PSA Delegates
· Cate Faehrmann - Nature Conservation Council
· Sam Lee - Coalition Gun Control
· Keith Muir - Colong Foundation
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said:
"Today's broad based action should be the wake up call Premier Nathan
Rees' needs to publicly declare the Shooters Party plan to hunt in
national parks will not be adopted in any form.
"Recreational hunting is not the way to manage feral animals. It is
time the Premier showed some courage and announced that there will be no
more negotiations with the two Shooters MPs on this issue.
Our national parks are an Australian icon and recreational shooting in
all these parks should be ruled out by Premier Rees.
