Stop the M5 Expansion

The Greens are campaigning against the State Labor government’s most recent motorway madness, the proposed $4.5 billion M5 Duplication project.

Lee is working both inside and outside of NSW Parliament and the Marrickville Greens councillors are working with the community, particularly in the Tempe area, to help fight this new motorway.

No Way RTA Tempe Rally

This project will:

·  add new lanes to the M5 motorway

·  duplicate the existing M5 tunnel

·  create an additional four lane arterial road called the Southern Sydney Connection, which will crash through the $17 million remediated Tempe Lands including wetlands, and dump traffic into local streets in St Peters and Alexandria.

The government has learnt nothing from its failed tunnel projects and it is negligent for failing to invest in public transport, rail freight infrastructure and alternative transport options.

This monster road project will destroy communities, increase greenhouse emissions and air pollution, induce traffic and absorb funding that should go into public transport.

It will also make the controversial M4 East project inevitable.

The duplicated M5 tunnel will require emission stacks to get rid of pollution. If the RTA continues its current form they will not be filtered. This will leave nearby residents to choke on fine particles, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.

Labor, at both Federal and State levels, has created an enormous freight problem by expanding Port Botany and Sydney Airport. It is now now struggling to deal with the wash up.

NSW Labor is seeking funding for the project from the Federal Minister for Transport Anthony Albanese, through Infrastructure Australia.

In an age of climate change and peak oil this new project just doesn't make sense.

The billions that might be allocated to this project would be much better spent on public transport, freight rail infrastructure and active transport.

Submissions to the RTA's feasibility study closed on 12 March 2010. The original February date was extended after a community outcry over the short timeframe.
